December 6th 2023
America is gravely wounded and on a path to oblivion. That seems like a bold statement, one full of hyperbole in a rather short sentence. Yet, as 2024 dawns, for tens of millions of Americans, the statement, sadly, rings so very true and consistent with their own reality and recent experiences.
When I returned to America from Ethiopia in 2015, I heard the constant refrain from so many others that our domestic political landscape “was the worst it has ever been.” Certainly, the Obama years had been challenging, given his rabid determination to distort U.S. history, attack his political opponents, and to “fundamentally change America.” While I took little issue with the sad reality and argument that a dyed in the wool communist had ascended to the presidency in the form of a race hustling, America hating radical “community organizer,” as a historian I could not help but point out that much of this seemed very much like hyperbole and an exaggeration of the political climate. However, the past near decade has not only proven the Cassandras to be correct, but their concerns for the fate of the greatest champion of liberty and humanity in history were on the mark.
When standing up for basic traditional liberal values found in the Bill of Rights, like freedom of speech and assembly makes one “right wing” in the eyes of the political left, when demanding that fraudulent economic migrants flooding America be turned back makes one “heartless,” when noting the wildly inappropriate response to a pandemic makes one a “COVID denier,” when using science to debunk gibberish makes you a “science denier,” when exposing the Democratic Party’s constant efforts to undermine the sanctity and security of our elections makes you “a threat to democracy,” when simply questioning the competence of an incompetent public official makes you “racist” or a misogynist,” or suggesting voter identification is a necessity makes you a racist, well, then my friends we do find ourselves in Cloud Cuckoo Land. As 2024 approaches, up is down, centrist is “right wing,” America is “systemically racist” and it’s not only acceptable to have disdain for patriots, soldiers and veterans, but it is apparently cool to do so. Antisemitism is horrible when a “white” man kills Jews in Pittsburgh, but when Hamas rapes, burns, executes, tortures Jews, well, “they had it coming.”
The events of the past decade are shocking to say the least. We have seen the disturbing expansion of a bureaucratic and administrative state consistently undermining and violating the Constitution and rogue federal and state governments illegally spying on and attacking law-abiding political “opponents” who are out of favor with the government of the day or the political leftists who have infiltrated and undermined the integrity and operations of our universities, media, elected offices, high schools, elementary schools, and even our most successful corporations. Thanks to Elon Musk, the once darling of the political leftist who saw him as a fellow traveler (boy did that get that assumption incorrect), we have evidence for Justice Department prosecutors to take legal action against federal agencies for violating the Constitution and the Civil Rights Act to silence centrists and conservatives who deigned to challenge the incorrect narrative of the left and its administrative state minions. Ironically, our federal government has become the very thing leftist political activists so loudly cried about in the 1960s and 1970s: a predatory agent. But it has become that way owing largely to the reality that leftists run those very institutions that they despised so long ago. Saul Alinsky must be smiling from his warm resting place in Hades. Rules for radicals indeed.
As 2024 dawns, I must confess I too have been stunned at the cognitive dissonance of a society that kicks disabled veterans out of care facilities to house criminal alien invaders. I also must admit that politically, discourse is perhaps the worst it has ever been in our history. Given the long path from 1776 to 2024, that is a startling admission for a historian and patriot like me. After all, Preston Brooks nearly beat Senator Sumner to death on the floor of the Senate in 1856, Kanas burned, and we lost over 600,000 lives in a civil war to preserve the Union and end chattel slavery. “Yellow journalism” led us into an empire building war with a decaying Spain. Racists successfully subverted the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments for nearly a century, denying black Americans their full Constitutional rights. Anarchists invented modern terrorism to disrupt the growth of America. Racist Franklin Delano Roosevelt imprisoned American citizens in concentration camps for not being white and Democrats fought tooth and nail to prevent civil rights legislation in the 1950s. When 68 million overwhelmingly white Americans voted for Obama in 2008, they were enlightened. When five million of them saw the error of their ways and abandoned Barry in 2012, suddenly white voters were racist (even though they still made up the overwhelming majority of his voters). But I cannot bury my head in the sand and claim that the current political discourse in our polity is anything other than what it truly has become: caustic and dangerous.
Over the course of more than 36 years in the U.S. Army (34 of them on active duty) while defending our wonderful nation and protecting liberty, I often told those with whom I interacted that in the military we take an oath to support and defend the Constitution, not to the leader. While we must follow and obey the lawful orders of those appointed over us, we do not take an oath to them, but rather to the ideals found in the Constitution, a color-blind document. My loyalty was not (is not) to Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump or Biden. It is to the Constitution. This is a strength far too often taken for granted. This commitment made it easy to defend others regardless of their faith, origin, ethnicity or skin pigmentation.
Unfortunately, the political left with its allies abroad, in the media, Hollywood, in education, in social media and now even running our banks and corporations have no such allegiance to the Constitution and use dangerous, defamatory language so often seen behind the Iron Curtain, in Nazi Germany, in the killing fields of Pol Pot’s Cambodia, and in failed socialist states the world over like Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea and South Africa. The key for leftists has always been to divide and conquer with name calling. So, any political opponent is suddenly a racist or a homophobe, or a misogynist and so on. Strangely, it is almost always the political left who is guilty of all those ills.
In 2023 their name calling is finally beginning to fall on deaf ears. You see the boy can only cry wolf so many times before folks grow wise to lies. Like Soviet style kangaroo courts, leftists not only call folks names but now pollute and obliterate the English language to achieve their ends. Try using dozens of non-existent genders in another language, say like German. Such lunacy is not only impracticable, but also impossible. Yet, refusing to play the silly game of endless genders with fictious pro-nouns makes one a “transphobe,” even though you have no fear of transgenders and invented pronouns are not tied to transgenderism.
There are some basic truths the left simply refuses to acknowledge and gets away with by hoodwinking tens of millions because they have successfully coopted the media, big tech and our educational institutions. The following is likely to cause palpitations and chest pains for the political left: Voting on election day and presenting photo identification is not racist. America is not systemically racist and was (prior to Barack Obama) a country that had made incredible strides towards equality of opportunity. Sex is a biological fact. Contrary to an Associate Justice’s inexplicable inability to define a woman, it is easily accomplished. Title IX was a major success, one destroyed by leftists bent on harming women. Black Americans have agency and do not need the left to paint them as perpetual victims. Fauci was wrong and dishonest. We are a sovereign nation, one entitled to control entry into our soil. Traversing six countries is not seeking asylum, it is destination shopping. The Federal Government has become a serial violator of our Constitution.
The ability of the media to mislead a woefully uninformed and frightened nation into voting for a serial plagiarist, pathological liar and constant threat to common sense and national security for president is perhaps the greatest triumph for the left as it seeks to destroy the United States from within. At least with Obama, a vote for the “first black” president was something folks could understand, regardless the foolhardiness of ignoring his message that he intended to fundamentally change America (which he accomplished). What did Biden offer? Nothing, other than the fact that he was not Donald Trump. And his presidency has delivered nothing but insecurity, inflation, and all the things the left would have you believe Trump will do when re-elected in 2024. At the risk of appearing to be pro-Trump, a neutral observer would note that Trump ended wars, stemmed the flow of criminal alien invaders across our borders, forced NATO deadbeats to carry their share of the mutual defense burden, boxed in North Korea, negotiated the historic Abraham Accords, lowered ridiculously high corporate tax rates, made record high levels of funding for Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) and so much more. These actions dramatically strengthened America. But Trump also failed on several fronts like spending, COVID, Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, the border wall and so on. The media and social media have painted a very different and wildly inaccurate image of Trump. Elon Musk is now suffering the same fate. Contrast this with the cognitive decline and endless list of Biden failures which the media fail to comment on, and one sees how the deck is stacked.
When will Alejandro Mayorkas face impeachment for dereliction of duty? When will Biden face charges for stealing classified information for over a decade and leaving it in a “think tank?” When will the FBI and its rogue agents face criminal charges for colluding, cajoling, and coercing twitter to censor 1st Amendment freedoms of political opponents (the FBI is supposed to be apolitical, by the way). When will the corrupt media finally ask pertinent questions of the political left? When will we as citizens begin to hold Congress accountable for burying us in debt and bastardizing our currency? The answer to these questions and more is that either we begin to do so in 2024 or we can say goodbye to our grand republic. America, liberty, and prosperity are on life support. Triage began in Virginia when parents were outraged that a high school rape was concealed and covered up. It made a tremendous advance when Elon Musk exposed the crimes of our administrative state with censorship via twitter. But it cannot end there.
Americans by and large tend to be people of faith, family and the flag. We must return to these roots to defeat the loons who bow down to the religions of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion – which is anything but the words that define the movement), ESG (environmental, social and governance) scores and those who adhere to an unscientific climate religion. We need a return to civic participation and responsibility so absent from society today. This is a problem not simply in America but around the world as well. Either we reign in the entitlement state, rogue federal government agencies and corrupt politicians or we perish, soon.
Love of country is not a crime nor is it something to be ashamed of when it comes to being an American. Ours is a nation founded on the highest ideals, ones we have often been found lacking in achieving. But we have uplifted billions of people with our example, our engagement, our blood and our innovation. Let us not allow wrongheaded, intellectually dishonest disdain for America to lead us to oblivion. Register to vote, file to run for office, use social media for good, campaign for what is right, engage with elected officials, school boards, local government and take back America from those who despise it.
